ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has said that no controversial legislation should be enacted for the creation of new provinces, warning that any decision taken in haste could undermine the unity of the federation. Speaking outside the Supreme Court, Barrister Gohar said that PTI founder Imran Khan should be allowed to meet with his political leadership and family members. He also stressed the need for meetings between Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and Mahmood Khan Achakzai, saying that Achakzai had written a letter to the prime minister regarding the Election Commission and that the matter should be taken seriously. Barrister Gohar said that talks with the government had so far remained limited to offers, adding that meaningful progress was needed in the negotiations. He warned that if decisions were taken unilaterally, “a flood of people” could take to the streets. He thanked the people of Sindh for warmly welcoming Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. According to Gohar, the reception demonstrated that the people wanted change and were opposed to the status quo. Commenting on terrorism, the PTI chairman said there should be no political point-scoring or political statements on the issue. He alleged that India and its intelligence agency RAW were behind terrorism in Pakistan, and called for a serious and responsible approach from the country’s political leadership. He said both civilians and members of the armed forces were making sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. On the creation of new provinces, Barrister Gohar said the issue was serious and required comprehensive debate and consultation. He opposed any controversial legislation and said that dividing Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan without the consent of elected representatives or the people could create further complications. He called for a consultative process similar to the one followed for the 18th Constitutional Amendment, warning that a rushed decision on the creation of new provinces could be detrimental to the unity of the federation.
