ISLAMABAD: A memorial reference was held at the NORI Auditorium in Islamabad to pay tribute to former Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Engr. Parvez Butt, NI, HI, SI, and acknowledge his decades-long services to Pakistan’s nuclear and strategic programmes.
Chairman PAEC Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar paid rich tribute to the late engineer, describing him as an accomplished technologist, engineer and visionary leader who made significant contributions to the development of the Commission and the country.
Dr. Anwar said Parvez Butt laid the foundations of a safety culture at PAEC by establishing the Directorate of Safety (DOS) in 2002. He described him as a pioneer of operational integrity at nuclear facilities and also highlighted his exceptional negotiation skills.
The PAEC chairman said Butt was among the “unsung heroes” of the “Road to Chaghai,” adding that several institutions and initiatives established through his vision continued to benefit the country. These included the PAEC General Hospital, PAEC Foundation, SES and other engineering setups.
The memorial was attended by members of the PAEC Commission, senior officials, former colleagues and associates of the deceased, family members and other distinguished guests.
Several former senior PAEC officials recalled their association with Parvez Butt and paid tribute to his professional commitment, leadership and national service. Speakers included former General Manager KCP-I Niamat Ali Javed, Scientist Emeritus Dr. Inam ur Rehman, former Member (Admin & BS) Dr. Kausar Abdullah Malik, former Member (Engineering) Aslam Umer and former Member (Power) Zia ul Hassan Siddiqui.
PAEC Member (Science) Dr. Shakeel Abbas Rofi presented a poetic tribute to the late engineer.
Former PAEC Chairman Muhammad Naeem, legendary PAEC figure Sultan Bashiruddin Mahmood and Maj. Gen. Shehryar Parvez Butt, DG (PDS), SPD, and son of the deceased, also shared their memories and reflected on his professional life and contributions.
Earlier, a documentary titled “In the Loving Memory of a Man Who Lived for Pakistan,” produced by the PAEC Public Relations Directorate, was screened. It highlighted Parvez Butt’s professional journey, achievements and dedication to the country.
The speakers remembered the former PAEC chairman as a dedicated and accomplished professional whose expertise and leadership contributed to the development and strengthening of Pakistan’s nuclear programme. They said his contributions had left a lasting legacy in the country’s strategic and nuclear capabilities.
The memorial reference concluded with tributes from colleagues, friends and family members, who remembered Parvez Butt for his lifelong commitment to Pakistan and his enduring contributions to the nation.
