ISLAMABAD: The government has constituted a 20-member special committee to review the administrative affairs of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and recommend reforms, according to sources in the Ministry of Health. The committee has been formed on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and comprises prominent health experts from both the public and private sectors. The committee will examine the existing administrative structure of PIMS and submit recommendations regarding the future management and operation of the hospital. Sources said the committee will present its report to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who will take a final decision on the hospital’s administrative system in light of the recommendations. The government has also decided to establish a Board of Governors to oversee PIMS affairs. The board is expected to include representatives and professionals from various fields. The move comes in the wake of the tragic fire at PIMS on August 26, which claimed the lives of 14 newborn babies. Following the incident, eight officials, including the Executive Director of PIMS, were suspended. Criminal proceedings have also reportedly been initiated against the suspended officials under the relevant laws.
