ISLAMABAD: Differences between the government and the Pakistan Peoples Party on some proposed laws on the issue of legislation regarding economy and tax reforms remain, while it has been agreed to postpone the approval of the disputed bills by the parliament and pass the consensus bills in the current parliamentary session.

According to the sources, the government has not yet been able to remove the concerns of the PPP on some proposed laws. The PPP has objections to some of the proposed laws affecting the provincial autonomy, especially the legislation related to the provinces.

PPP sources say that approval from the Council of Common Interests (CCI) is necessary before approving certain laws related to provincial autonomy, however, the government is deliberately delaying approval of certain laws from the CCI. PPP is of the opinion that some laws are being tried to be approved directly by the Parliament, contrary to the rules and regulations.

According to the sources, the consultation on the proposed legislation is going on between the legal teams of the government and the PPP. The two sides have agreed to delay the approval of controversial bills till consensus, while the bills that have been agreed to be passed during the current parliamentary session.

According to PPP sources, discussions are also ongoing on the legislative issues related to the Ministry of Finance and the Maritime Affairs Act. Apart from this, consultations are being held between the government and the PPP on some laws related to Mustafa Ampex and amendments in the laws of State Owned Enterprises (SOs).

Sources say that the purpose of the ongoing negotiations between the government and the PPP is to resolve differences on the proposed laws and create a consensus, however, further consultation is required for final progress on some important legal issues.
