ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to meet Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman today to discuss proposals for abolishing the petroleum levy and providing relief to the public amid rising fuel costs. According to sources, the meeting will take place at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad this afternoon. Jamaat-e-Islami Deputy Emir Liaquat Baloch will also attend, while several other members of the party’s negotiating team are expected to participate. Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Ali Pervaiz Malik and Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah are also expected to attend the meeting on behalf of the government. The meeting comes after Jamaat-e-Islami announced a long march against the petroleum levy imposed on petroleum products. However, the party postponed the planned protest after the prime minister contacted its leadership and invited them for talks. During the meeting, both sides are expected to review proposals concerning the petroleum levy, possible reductions in fuel prices and measures to provide financial relief to the public. The outcome of the talks could determine the government’s next steps regarding the petroleum levy and fuel price relief. However, no final decision on abolishing the levy or reducing petroleum prices has been announced so far.
