ISLAMABAD: Addressing the Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister said that while making an important announcement regarding LPG, he said that the decades-old 'Mafia era' is over, which would have earned 'crores of billions' and that its import has been managed with full competition and transparency. He asked to brief the Minister Pervelim Ali Pervez on the new system, who told the meeting that 7,000 tonnes of LPG is required per day, out of which 2500 tonnes are produced locally. He further said that now government agencies including Pakistan State Oil (PSO), a subsidiary of Sui Southern, Pakistan LNG Limited and Parco Pearl Gas will also import LPG and it will be sold through open auction in small lots. That the government had increased the price of LPG by 14 rupees 73 paise per kg on November 1, after which the new price of a domestic cylinder of 11.8 kg became 3 thousand 470 rupees 9 paise, but it is being sold at almost double the fixed price. On the other hand, the LPG Marketers Association, rejecting the government's new pricing formula, has announced a nationwide strike and stop the sale of LPG from November 16. The Prime Minister has said that the government has not let the burden of the Rs 15 per liter hike in petrol fall on the common man and has made it mandatory for refineries to contribute their 'windfall profits'. The government has reduced the price of petrol by Rs.9 in the last two days. He said that this decision is the result of the timely strategy of the Ministry of Energy, OGRA and the relevant committee, which did not allow the burden of price increase to fall on the public. He further said that the fuel subsidy program in the country has been very successful and transparent, from which one and a half million people have benefited so far and 28 billion rupees have been spent in this regard. The prime minister hinted at the end of the subsidy on fuel, saying that the subsidy program would "continue till the end of December". Acting on an Intelligence Bureau (IB) report, he directed strict action, closure and heavy fines against petrol pumps that 'messed' with the subsidy programme. "I will ask the Minister of Petroleum not only to close such petrol pumps, but also to impose a heavy fine on them so that they remember the holiday milk." While talking about law and order, he mentioned the approval of the development and security package of 160 billion rupees for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and reiterated the determination that terrorism will be crushed with the cooperation of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and the federal and provincial governments. The Prime Minister congratulated the Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on behalf of the Cabinet on getting the Chairmanship of the Group of 24 and expressed satisfaction that this responsibility is in very worthy hands. He congratulated the entire nation on the successful test of the Air-to-Air Missile by Pakistan and credited Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, his team and related institutions.
