ISLAMABAD — June 27, 2026: The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a critical alert warning of potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), landslides, and flash floods across the country’s mountainous northern regions from June 27 to July 3, 2026.

According to the NDMA, a combination of continuous severe heatwaves and anticipated rainfall has rapidly accelerated glacier melting. This is expected to significantly increase water flow and cause a sudden rise in water levels across rivers, streams, and nullahs in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

High-Risk Zones Identified

The authority has urged local administrations and communities to remain highly vigilant, particularly in the following districts:

 Gilgit-Baltistan: Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Kharmang, Astore, and Diamer.

 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Swat, and adjacent valleys.

Infrastructure Threat: The NDMA warned that sudden flash floods and mudslides could cause temporary closures of link roads in hilly areas, potentially isolating low-lying populations. Severe damage to critical infrastructure, including highways, bridges, and local irrigation systems, is also feared.


Pre-Planned Emergency Response

The NDMA emphasized that the current meteorological situation aligns precisely with the seasonal weather outlook issued by the NEOC three to four months ago. This early modeling has allowed provincial and local departments to ensure timely preparations and pre-position emergency machinery and resources.

Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and local administrations in vulnerable valleys have been directed to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of glacial lakes and water channels.

Safety Advisory for Citizens and Tourists

In light of the mounting risks, the NDMA has issued strict directives for locals, travelers, and tourists currently in or heading to the northern areas:

 Avoid Waterways: Refrain from any unnecessary movement near rivers, streams, and glacial lakes.

 Travel Planning: Check official weather forecasts and government travel advisories before embarking on journeys through mountainous terrain.

 Early Warning Signs: Immediately report any sudden rise in water levels, changes in water color, or unusual sounds emanating from nearby glaciers to the local administration.

 Compliance: Strictly follow the guidelines provided by local traffic police and law enforcement agencies while traveling.
