Electricity Consumers May Face Rs41 Billion Additional Burden
ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers may face an additional financial burden of Rs41 billion as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has formally requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to increase the electricity tariff by Rs2.52 per unit under the July fuel price adjustment.
According to NEPRA, a hearing on the CPPA’s request has been scheduled for August 27. The proposed increase, including GST, would place an estimated additional burden of Rs41 billion on consumers if approved.
The CPPA submitted detailed data on the cost of electricity generation during July. It said 10.78% of electricity was generated from imported LNG at a cost of Rs47.37 per unit, with total expenditure on LNG-based generation reaching Rs77.19 billion.
Meanwhile, 1.42% of electricity was generated from furnace oil at Rs50.07 per unit, costing Rs10.77 billion. Around 31 million units were generated from diesel at a significantly higher cost of Rs54.47 per unit.
Nuclear power accounted for 10.10% of total generation at a cost of Rs3.02 per unit.
During July, hydropower contributed 39.81% of total electricity generation, while local coal accounted for 10.91% and imported coal for 14.38%.
NEPRA will review the generation costs and other data submitted by the CPPA before making a final decision at the hearing scheduled for August 27.
